Decoding VIN history of a car
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique identification number assigned to each vehicle. This code consists of 17 characters that include various information about the vehicle. The VIN fulfils several important functions:
- Uniqueness: each VIN code is unique to a particular vehicle, which allows the vehicle to be uniquely identified.
- Manufacturer information: The first three characters (WMI) usually indicate the country of the vehicle's manufacturer.
- Vehicle characteristics: from 4 to 10 characters are encrypted descriptive information, which contains data on the series, wheelbase, body type, engine type and other technical characteristics according to the VIN.
- Control number: the next following digit of the VIN code is used as a control number to check the validity of the other characters.
- The last 4 digits are the serial number on the assembly line.
Checking a car by VIN code plays an important role in car registration, insurance, ordering spare parts and in case of searching for a stolen car. This unique identifier is an integral part of any vehicle documents: technical passport, insurance policy, warranty card.
